July 2025 Guest Artists Matthew Raney
Matthew Raney is a painter whose work reflects a sincere and hopeful outlook, characterized by relatable themes and a vibrant cast of characters. Through his art, he explores universal emotions—love, loss, joy—inviting viewers to connect with each piece in their own personal way.
His journey as an artist began in grade school, sparked by a challenge with spelling and a reward system set by his mother: a comic book for every A on his weekly spelling test. Immersed in the worlds of Batman, Spider-Man, and G.I. Joe, he began to draw, becoming obsessed with recreating the heroes and villains from his favorite comics.
Comic books from the 1980s and ’90s remain a core influence in his work today. Inspired by artists such as Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Frank Miller, George Pérez, and Jack Kirby, his paintings are characterized by bold colors, strong outlines, and visual nods to classic comic art, including the iconic “Kirby Crackle.”
Raney attended the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. Over the past twenty years, he has lived and taught Art in six states. He now resides in Michigan City, Indiana, with his wife and two children. You can find his work on Instagram @BlueRectangleDesigns.
