July 2026 Guest Artist Alec Hoogland

Alec Hoogland (they/them) graduated with a degree in ceramics in 2016. Following graduation, they worked in production pottery for a year and a half before deciding to pursue clay full-time. In 2018, they began working as an independent contractor for Justin Rothshank. Since then, Alec has exhibited in galleries across the country while continuing their own studio practice. In 2023, they opened Highland Studio & Gallery, where they curate exhibitions, collaborate with artists, and teach classes.

My work reflects the post-industrial and rural landscapes of the Midwest. Through monoprinting, I capture the entropy in urban decay found throughout Rust Belt cities. Native wildflowers juxtaposed against these surfaces introduce a softness reminiscent of the rural fields surrounding them. By placing these motifs on functional ceramics, I create objects that invite community, conversation, and shared experiences at the table.
