Somebody once gave me a free sticker that said “Create or Suffer,” and that almost entirely

sums up my artistic endeavors. I have looked at that sticker every day on my bedroom mirror for

probably 10 years, and every year it somehow rings truer than the year before.

Create or suffer. I (like many of my artistic comrades) have always suffered with depression and

anxiety. I started making art around the time I could hold a crayon. Being creative and making

things with my hands has always helped to quell a brain that has persistently bullied me

throughout my cognizant life. The more I create, the less heavy life feels. No matter what the

medium is.

To my astonishment, some folks enjoy my creations so much, they decide that they want to

wear them for the rest of their lives. I have had the amazing honor and privilege of tattooing so

many wonderful people.

I grew up watching movies like ‘The Secret Garden,’ ‘Ever After’ and anything that was

produced by Studio Ghibli. I read ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’ with a flashlight, late at

night under my blankets. It made me long for a more whimsical world.

When I make art, I enjoy focusing on the things in life that make me feel like the possibility of

magic is real. The unspoken conversations between the flowers and the butterflies, the song the

wind sings as is passes through trees, the glittering beads of dew in my garden in the morning,

hearing my children’s laughter ringing through the house. Things that make me feel connected

to something more enchanting in my everyday life. It keeps my head above water. I truly do feel

like if I am not able to create, I suffer.
